All Dog Foods Are Not Created Equal
While genetics and environment play an important part in your dog's
heath, a balanced diet comprised of quality ingredients is extremely
important to the well-being and longevity of your Cairn.
We recommend feeding your Cairn a quality premium food. Here are a few
things to look for and avoid when choosing a dog food brand:
What to look for in a dog food
High quality foods contain:
- Superior sources of protein like whole, fresh meats or single source of
meat meal
- Meat source as one of the first two ingredients
- Whole, unprocessed grains, vegetables and other foods
Inferior foods contain:
- Generic fats, animal protein, poultry protein
- Artificial preservatives including BHA, BHT or Ethoxyquin
- Prophylene glycol, a chemical added to some "chewy" foods
- Sweeteners like corn syrup, sucrose add to enhance flavor

Although we do not endorse any particular brand, we have listed a few
of the manufacturers we think produce quality dog food. Use the
links to visit the manufacturer websites to make a comparison of
ingredients and fat and protein percentages. Most sites even
provide information on where to buy in your area. You can also
order from Pet Food Direct
and have foods delivered to your door. A note, "grocery store"
brands do not fit into our definition of premium foods.
