Making the right decision

Puppies need special care and handling.  Many busy families who can make time for a pet often cannot spare the time and energy it takes to raise a happy into a well-adjusted companion.   Consider carefully whether you have time and energy to raise a puppy.

Cairns remain active and are truly puppies throughout most of their lives.

Adults

  • An adult Cairn from a responsible breeder is a good way to skip over those difficult months of accidents, chewing, jumping...  He's usually settled down and already a happy, well-adjusted pet.
  • An adult dog from a responsible breeder is NOT a "used" dog or a reject that nobody wants, unless it is a rescued dog.
  • Cairns raised and trained by some more experienced in handling terriers often emerge as better companions.
  • Cairn Terriers can live 15+ years and remain puppies well into their senior years. It is far easier to asses the temperament in an adult than it is to predict it in a puppy.
  • You're more likely to find a better match for your lifestyle with an adult from a responsible breeder than with a puppy or even a rescued dog.
  • Cairns adapt very quickly and easily to new homes and lifestyles at almost any age.

Puppies

  • Puppies are infants and need constant care and supervision.  Even at six to eight months when they look like dogs, they can be quite mischievous, active and often destructive.
  •  Acquiring  a young puppy does not guarantee it will get along with other pets in the household. Puppies may get along well with other adult dogs in the household, but when they too become adults dominance issues can surface.
  • In a young puppy It is difficult to determine what his adult  temperament will be like.
